My porcelain and mixed media sculptures and installations are rooted in my exploration of the complicated relationships between humans, our fellow animals, and the rest of the natural world. I find myself fascinated by the human propensity to find solace in the beauty and complexity of the natural world while simultaneously acting in ways that lead to its destruction. I often think about wild nature in contrast to the controlled nature we bring into our interior spaces, the juxtaposition of affection and dominance required for pet-keeping as well as the profound effect humans have on the balance of our ecosystems and the inevitable remnants of extinction left behind in spaces that we are filling with our burgeoning population.
This particular body of hand-built porcelain animal piles and huddles of creatures was made in response to the separation and isolation we all have experienced the past few years which revealed the vulnerability and fragility of our world in an intensely personal way. The work
highlights the desire we share to connect and intermingle with one another as well as the importance and strength that lies in standing together in solidarity.
