Fractured Aviary
For the past year and a half, Bayla Arietta has been working on an ongoing research project collecting data on bird window-strike casualties in the city of New Haven (read more about the project here: https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2020/01/28/morris-windows-of-opportunity/).
Working with other collaborators, including ecologist Dr. Andis Arietta, and the Executive Director of the Law, Ethics & Animals Program at Yale Law School, Viveca Morris, the project has unearthed the heart-breaking story highlighting the impact our built structures have on bird populations. It is estimated that over one billion birds die each year in the U.S. from window strikes. The group has decided to use the data they collected to pressure cities into re-examining their building ordinances and consider bird friendly designs.
This exhibition seeks to help translate data from scientific information into a compelling narrative that people can connect with by showcasing works that focus on the beauty and fragility of bird species while also reckoning with the negative impact of our own built environment, and the choices we make in constructing it.
